I saw Valient Thorr as an opening act for Mastodon at the Orpheum Theater on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin. They went on stage early in the evening and there weren’t that many people there yet, so I was able to get pretty close. I’m not a big fan of larger venues like this but it was still smaller than a stadium so I survived.
Valient Thorr is a hard rock/ metal act. They have a strong sound and their lyrics are entertaining. They put on a good show and were a good first act for this four band bill. I would like to see them again only on a smaller stage in a more intimate setting. They were able to create enough energy in the room to keep everyone into the show, but it was still a large empty room to start out and it would be much more fun to see them up close.
Live they weren’t as thrashy as I remembered them being on CD. In a way they remind me of Bible of the Devil, good riffs, dual guitars, and not too serious lyrics. Also, if you are going to play through a Green amp, I am going to give you a fair chance. The show was very entertaining and kept a smile on my face the whole time. I would recommend checking them out if they come to your area. Especially if it is a smaller club show, I think they would light the place up.
