Baroness was the second opening band at the Mastodon show. To be honest, they were the only reason that I went to this show. I don’t care for the venue that much, the ticket price was more than I wanted to pay for the bill and I had seen Mastodon back when Remissions came out and after Leviathan I didn’t really care for them anymore. Luckily for me I made the right choice and went to the show. In my opinion, they won the night.
I saw Baroness once before back in 2006 at Emissions 8 in Youngstown, Ohio, and they were one of the best bands of the four day festival. For sure the best band that I had not heard of prior. I have been waiting for years to see them again and here was my chance.
What can I not say good about Baroness. They have a great thick stoner guitar sound. They have harmony in the vocals in a way that not many bands outside of Torche excel at. Their songs teeter on that edge of poppy that usually drives me away, but they are so tight that I can’t stop listening.
Live, they are tight as can be. They sound very polished as a live band while still maintaining a rough sludgy edge and they drive through the set with high energy. I highly recommend that you go out and see Baroness whenever you get a chance.
