First, I should mention that Between the Buried and Me played between Baroness and Mastodon. I didn’t get any good pictures of them and I honestly only caught very little of their show. What I did see was very energetic and the crowd was very into it. While I like BTB&M on CD, they didn’t come off that well live for me. Again, I didn’t see very much as I was very distracted with conversations during their set.
On to Mastodon. I can’t remember what year it was, but it was right when Remissions came out and they were opening for High on Fire’s Surrounded by Thieves tour, that I first saw Mastodon. My impression then was that they were a great sludge band with an amazing drummer. I went out immediately and bought the Remissions album the next day, and the reissue with the DVD when it came out a few months later. Leviathan was also on the top of my list when it came out, and I loved that album. When Blood Mountain came out, I lost interest.
So Mastodon is playing, I loved them live when I saw them back in the day, I might as well check it out while I’m here. They played all Crack the Skye on what I later learned was their first set. I listened to most of the set, and the sound and energy were good, but I’m not a big fan of the direction that they went. So I made the mistake of leaving early to beat the rush out of downtown.
I later found out that they came back out and played a second set of songs from Remissions and Leviathan. This I would have loved to see. Unfortunately my annoyance and impatience got the best of me. For the reason that they are playing a full set of older material I would like to see them again, however I can do without the Crack the Skye set.
I was stuck way in the back and got one decent picture.
