David Vandervelde was the opening act for Black Mountain at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, WI. I had never heard anything from David Vandervelde before this evening and didn’t know what to expect. His music sounds like a mix between The Jayhawks and The Bodeans. It has a poppy and folky feel to it but I felt like the emotion was forced.
Grant it, this isn’t my favorite kind of music but I still wasn’t impressed by his show. I thought that 2 of the 7 or 8 songs were O.K. but the rest bored me. The songs were monotonous and didn’t have anything very unique to offer. His guitar solos were simple yet he needed every ounce on concentration and emotion to play them, everything seemed very faked. His first album is titled “The Moonstation House Band”. That is about what I would equate this group to, a house band. Not terrible, but nothing special either.
